Fast becoming the bragging rights of
disillusioned city council members everywhere, plastic bag bans are based on hyped-up environmental concerns about plastic that are then driven to an
illogical conclusion with plastic grocery bags being the scapegoat. Proponents of bag bans are convinced there is a dire
emergency that justifies them denying everyone access to a clean, safe, convenient, recyclable plastic bags. They focus on one tiny fractional use of plastic (one of the most useful plastic uses!), and forcefully seek to stop stores from supplying a convenient way for people to carry their products home. Willing city council members push this agenda onto
their citizens, yet they lack the courage to voluntarily put the issue to a
public vote. Instead, they hold "public hearings" on the matter, and hundreds of emotional "environmentalists" show up warning of everything from extinction of species to unsubstantiated statistics to explain why citizens must be denied this freedom. The simple plastic bag is blamed for all the woes of the entire plastic industry, and the city councilmembers then claim they must act responsibly and override their citizens free choice of plastic bags at the store. The cities then spend hundreds of thousands
of dollars rolling out and enforcing their silly bag bans on their own citizens, citizens are inconvenienced, public health is risked, businesses lose money, and people are angered and frustrated on a daily basis. Yet the proponents and council members feel warm and fuzzy for forcing this silly law onto the people!
And of course, these bag bans are
never held accountable for achieving any actual results.
